Gout

Picture
Gout is a systemic disease characterized by an elevation of uric acid in the blood. An acute gout attack manifests itself in the foot with an intense inflammatory reaction involving one or more of the joints. As you can see by the above photos, the foot becomes red, hot and swollen. The area involved is usually so painful that it hurts to have even the bedsheets touch the foot. Approximately 18% of people who develop gout have a family history of the condition. Regularly drinking alcohol interferes with the removal of uric acid from the body and can increase the risk for developing gout. Other risk factors include high dietary intake of foods that contain high levels of purine (e.g., cream sauces, red meat, sardines and liver) and certain medications that may interfere with the body's ability to excrete uric acid causing the level to build-up. Our office is experienced in treating acute gout and will usually coordinate care with your family physician for long-term control of your uric acid.
Our doctors  have over 30 years experience treating patients with gout. Please call our office today at 440-934-8444 to make an appointment or fill-out our Contact Form.
